Grandpa

“Granpa, what is that?”
“Ah, that’s a gasometer.”
“It looks very huge, beautiful and interesting.”
“It used to be store gas to produce light and heating.”
“So is that an energy factory?”
“Exactly. In the past, coal came here by trains. Then this coals was burned in ovens by the workers and the gas that rising from coal was keeped at these huge buildings. At this times one of our entertainments was watching the smoke that soaring from the factory. The workers who worked here were living there. I had a lot of friends around here and in fact some of them were French or German. I liked the French kids talking. Anyhow later on I learned French. Streets that we walked just a moment ago, Moda, many place of Kadıköy were lightened by this factory. Also, we cooked our meals by this gas which came from here. Besides, it called gashouse to that factory. It was the biggest gashouse in the Anatolian Bank. Furthermore, not only in Hasanpaşa, there are three or four gashouses in İstanbul.”
“Well, then what happened?”
“Then country was changed, as well as it changed very quick. Oil came to our lives as it is in the world. Our economy, sociocultural state, pleasures, understanding were changed in a degenerate way. Lots of people who lived in Anotolia were immigrate to İstanbul. As a consequence of this situation, employee rights were changed and these factories closed. Generally emigration is effected culture, habits and common memory badly. After all sometimes I can’t understand your speak and even your playings. We used to play hide and seek at factories garden, we played ball. But now you can’t get out of the house because there is no place to play for you at outside, everywhere is fill up with apartments.”
“Well, why is the gasometer looks like so rotten?”
“Because, some people has loot the place and sold the irons and everything, briefly irresponsibility.”
“Does it use again?”
“Not for a gashouse but of course it can use. I always thought that it can turn into a museum because there aren’t too much gasometer in the world as well as many people have memories about the place. If I’m not mistaken, you went to Hagia Sophia last weekend. For example, it is a world heritage. I think this place is also an industrial heritage.”
“I think they can make a children’s playground. Besides maybe there is some farm animals around the garden.”
“Yes, they can…”
“Also there will be toy makers, on the other day, my mom told me that there were toy makers in the past, I wonder how it was.”

“Actually, there will be food and drink places, I get hungary when I’m tired. People can come here and rest. By the way I’m hungary grandpa.”
