Historical Fountains in İstanbul

The water has been the most precious substance needs in human life throughout history as well as today.For thousands of years ago, the human being tried to drain the freshwater with canals, to store in some locations and the water that has been brought with some network systems were drained of structural elements such as fountains, baths and cisterns. The first and middle ages,the cities were surrounded by walls with the aim of protection due to wars.Because of that water collection facilities outside walls remained unprotected and during the attack on this cities the first job of enemies was to destroy this water facilities outside walls to force the cities to surrender.Because of this phenomenon,a large number of water reservoirs has begun to be made in cities with time.The historical development of water facilities in Istanbul is no different.After conquering Istanbul by the Ottomans,particularly palaces, mosques, baths, barracks, and some government man's houses were brought water and fountains have been the key elements in submitting public water.In Istanbul,the first Turkish fountains have been made before conquest of Istanbul. In the anatomy of fountains, there are some architectural elements. They have a reservoir where water was stored in. Roofs were built to cover the reservoir.The most significant element of fountains is their eaves that give an aesthetic beauty and separates from other architectural elements.They are built as die-cut edges and embroidered on them. It contains inscriptions to praising the person who made fountain or recording the history of the construction and they are processed on stone or marble slabs. Fountains have a very fine carving and these monumental works that are look like a dress processed on precious jewelry, give a distinctive beauty to Istanbul.Fountains are the inspiration for the name of their locations.At the present time, there are so many streets and avenues named from fountains' names in Istanbul. Fountains have become an focal point at the description of addresses when communication weren't overspread.In each era, fountains have been the subject in poems,songs and folk songs,miniatures and engravings.With wide eaves, fountains are places where people can relax and shading,meet and chat with other people,nice friendship was established and have become places where lovers meet. Furthermore there were not seen only a water facility,there has an important meaning at Turkish's social life and culture. Today, almost all fountains aren't used as their priority function.
