Synthesis Between Orient and Occident

Railway stations reminds us convergency and seperation however they are the shelter and destinations of trains which is one of the most important public service vehicle. Except the other railway stations Sirkeci Railway Station is defined as a cultural heritage for it’s location,strategic importance and history. We must aware these treasures and let them live and maket hem survive for next generations.

A.Jasmund who was an engineer and architect that built Sirkeci Railway Station. He was a chief designer in Sultan II. Abdülhamit era. This building described as vanishing point of Orient and occident. That’s why regional and national manners were used. Pointed arches and clay tile stripes were used to reflect the orientalist manner. In the middle, a wide stone entrance door was designed which reminds Seljucks period.

Sirkeci Railway Station was known as gate that opens to Europe and also used as soldier and load consigning. Sirkeci Railway Station’s cafe was hosting passangers and meeting place for most of artists and statesman. This bring Sirkeci a social importance and it’s liveness and adaptation to the city.

In our country most of valuable building was forgotten and abandoned. Lots of them conserved after facing prosecution. Awareness of this heritage must be transferred to the next generation. That’s the way to prevent destruction of heritages. Determining heritages and restoring them is way of conserving. This is possible as considering it’s function in past and thinking how this function will be developed.

I think Sirkeci has it’s own style by defining a part of history, cross-section of living community. That’s why preservation must be done in accuracy. I suggest splintery schemed proposal which can be defined as words: whole and components. Components describes extended and reinterpreted functions and spaces. They composed Sirkeci. This wholeness will be against Marmaray Project which plans to destroy the current function of Sirkeci. Wholeness will be the interference in abstract aspect also in overall.

In conclusion, conserving as the way I suggest, will provide awareness, knowledge and senses on social groups.
