Revitalizaiton of the Old Factory Buildings

Cities have been beginning to grow up rapidly since the end of 1950’s. Many major changes have been occurred in urban space. We have been feeling better these changes recently. Income groups have changed, dissociations have become sharp. In addition, the regions of the houses have changed, the new regions formed. Jamming and distancing took place at the same time. On the other hand, distances both decreased and increased. We observe that the cities are spread like a virus and try to stay dynamic by changing their shell. These rapid changes caused new requirements, new user models, and new technological necessities. All of these requirements and necessities mean new buildings. For instance; the building, which is used to be effectual for city and city residents yesterday, is abandoned as a result of new requirements of today. Therefore, architecture is trying to create new building typologies. While the new requirements are being provided in new architecture, it becomes an important question: “what will the old buildings be?”

The most significant change is seen on factories that feeds the cities economically and make them livable of building groups.

In last 50 years, factories started to remain inside of the cities due to their rapid developing. Factories which cannot answer the user requirements are abandoned and they become the huge, empty masses in urban areas. Nowadays, authorities think about how revaluation these buildings for people, urban and urban life and they create some projects for this.

In İstanbul where developed rapidly with the over than fifteen million population, these huge buildings reserve to new functions such as museum, art center, cultural center, university and theatre. In the past, Factory buildings used to work for economy but now they work for culture.

After the restorations, many old factory buildings which are located in seaside of Haliç –it s famous as a Golden Horn- are important to urban life again. Silahtarağa Power Station was founded in 1913. It’s the first Power Station in Turkey. It was used until 1983. Today, with the additional buildings, it takes part in the urban life as İstanbul Bilgi University, Energy Museum, Santralİstanbul Art Gallery. Another historical building in Hasköy, Haliç is Hasköy Shipyard. It was founded to renewing the City Lines Ships in 1861. It has fulfilled this function until 1984. Since 1999, it has been using as an Industrial Museum that has a rich collection. Tekel Tobacco Factory, that is located in Asian seaside of the Bosporus, is serving İstanbul’s cultural life as the State Theatre, State Opera and Ballet Stages after the successful restorations.

As a consequence, transforming the buildings to space that doing art in is the positive development of humanity. It is significant to enrich the buildings by adding them new functions but not ruining their historical values or their space sensations. Besides, this conception allows buildings to increase their architectural quality with a new modern identity, prevent being disconnected from city and make them live.
